The base Toyota Corolla comes with LED headlights, a big touchscreen audio system with Bluetooth, a backup camera, and “Toyota Safety Sense™ P (TSS-P) — Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection (PCS w/PD), Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist (LDA w/SA), Automatic High Beams (AHB), Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC).”

I don’t know about whatever you posted, but that Oppulence commercial is one of the best that was ever shown.

I’ve been test driving vehicles lately, and yeah, things that were high end in the mid-aughts are now normal features on my not luxury truck. The resolution on older screens is laughable, too.

They’re all luxury cars!

Except, like, the Versa. And even it has a rear-view camera (mandated) and Bluetooth.

Tech gimmicks inevitably become cheaper and easier to mass produce which makes them more common in cheaper cars.

Even with all those features you mentioned, the Corolla is still a pile of crap, even compared to other cars in its segment. It’s slow, doesn’t handle, it’s loud, and the interior is plasticky as hell.

Driven back to back with something like a Civic, 3, etc the difference is striking .

That’s the progress of the automobile for ya. In 1955, the Ford Thunderbird was one of the most luxurious American cars on the market because it featured optional - get ready - power windows and seats.

Yep! Now, get into my“luxury Mustang”, no A/C, no tach, no clock, no power windows, no power locks, no power anything! At least my headlights hide behind clever little doors and those sequential tail lights sure are cool.

I think the differentiating line now is not features so much as materials. The interior of an optioned Corolla should still be much less luxurious that a base “luxury” car.

Right, clearly a luxury car these days has gobs of power, a supple ride, fine materials, a quiet cabin,  and all the tech stuff, but it is incredible how much of the tech is now available on what were considered econoboxes.

I just wish the memory feature on the power seats would show up in down-market cars. I really don’t understand why this hasn’t happened yet, when power everything and heated seats and leather, etc. are there.

That’s why I am enjoying my K900 so much more than I would a GT trim Mazda 6, even though the 6 is a good car.

I agree, the corolla might have more tech than my M3, but my M3 is more luxurious. The materials are a on a completely different level.

I’ve never ridden in an M3. Are the materials a cut above the base 3 series, or are they the same?

Somewhat. The leather is a better quality, it does share some parts with the 3.

I have explained before (and people are too stupid to understand) that adding electronic features is really cheap. Sure, software development teams aren’t cheap, but the cost of their output is fixed across the model run or even product range. I develop a web interface for controlling one product and it can be implemented across the range of similar products (provided they needed enough computing power to run a basic web server) for pocket change per unit. In many cases the software is reducing the cost/complexity of the assemblies as well, which often makes implementing the hardware/software a net gain in profits.

I mean, look at modern car engines. The total number of parts is way down since we started having computers control them. Today, they’re ridiculously simple and totally dependent on a control computer.

I’ve ridden in older 3 series and thought that the interior is quality, but not more luxurious than my Sedona (which I consider to be high quality, but still not in the luxury class). I have not been in current additions of the 3, however, and I’d like to see how much it’s improved. I think the biggest advances in car interiors over time have come from the advances in polymers and the affordability to use them.

Especially funny as it existed in actual luxury cars 20+ years ago.

It’s all about differentiation and probably reducing wiring/switches a bit. The fact is that it’s easy to implement if you have position feedback on the seat assemblies (but they probably don’t). Most power seats probably just have either switches, an amperage cutoff, or monitor back emf to sense the end of travel.
